Why in News?
100th anniversary of the Kakori Train Action.
About Kakori Incident:
- On 9 August 1925, members of the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA) boldly executed an armed operation to seize treasury funds from a British government train. This act aimed to finance the revolutionary cause and deliver a strong political statement against colonial oppression.
- Key Personalities Involved:
Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqullah Khan, Chandrashekar Azad, Rajendra Lahiri, Manmathnath Gupta, Roshan Singh - Location: Kakori, a village near Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh
- Incident: The revolutionaries halted the Number 8-Down train and took cash from the guard’s compartment.
- Reaction of the British Government:
– Arrested a large number of revolutionaries and tried them in the Kakori Conspiracy Case (1925)
– Hanged Ashfaqulla Khan, Ramprasad Bismil, Roshan Singh and Rajendra Lahiri (hanged on December 19, 1927)
– Others received long-term imprisonment.
– Chandrashekhar Azad escaped arrest and carried on the fight until 1931. - Aftermath of the Incident:
– The power of HRA weakened.
– Reorganisation of the HRA to Hindustan Socialist Republican Army (HSRA).
– Leaders like Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Shiv Vermainfused socialist ideology into the movement.
